LIVE! Ep. 2: Transgender/Nonbinary Diversity & Belonging in the Corporate World

by | Jul 7, 2020

On June 15, 2020, the Supreme Court delivered a major victory to LGBTQ employees in the United States.

In a historic decision, the court ruled that the 1964 Civil Rights Act protects gay, lesbian, and transgender employees from discrimination based on sex. Given that nearly half of the states in the U.S. have no legal protection for LGBTQ employees, this is a big step in the right direction.

The federal law will now protect employees in all states from firing and other adverse employment decisions made on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Of course, we all know that there is so much more to achieving true diversity, inclusiveness and belonging in the corporate world for the LGBTQ+ community than a court ruling.

That’s why on this episode of LIVE! with Angelique Rewers, we spoke with Jay Pryor (they/them/theirs), CEO and founder of Jay Pryor Consulting, and one of the top global experts on LGBTQ – transgender/non-binary inclusiveness and belonging.

We addressed head on how organizations and companies can show up authentically as allies to the LGBTQ community — and especially how they can retain transgender and nonbinary employees in their organization.

This is the MOVEMENT Jay is leading.

And the importance of this work to increase corporate diversity and inclusion — especially for the LGBTQ+ community — cannot be overstated.

According to a study conducted by the Boston Consulting Group, 40% of LGBTQ employees are closeted at work and 75% have reported experiencing negative day-to-day workplace interactions related to their LGBTQ identity in the past year.

During our conversation, Jay also shared their incredible story, as well as some of their best strategies and advice for how they’ve established themselves as a true leader in this movement — lessons you can no doubt apply as you build your own thought leadership platform.

You’ll also hear Jay’s answers to tough questions, including how they’ve navigated some of the most interesting clients they’ve worked with on corporate diversity and inclusion, and what advice they have for you when the work you’re doing in the world requires old paradigms to be shattered.

Most of all, we hope this discussion will inspire you on your own path to LEAD YOUR MOVEMENT.
